Rheinmetall and MBDA to form naval laser weapons joint venture

Rheinmetall and MBDA Germany plan to establish a joint venture in early 2026 to develop and produce naval laser weapon systems, building on a successful partnership that began in 2019.

The systems are designed to complement traditional naval guns and missiles, with a strong focus on countering drones and agile threats at short range. A laser demonstrator jointly developed by the two companies has already been integrated on a German naval vessel and proven operational effectiveness over a year of sea trials.

The initiative aims to deliver a fully operational capability to the German Navy, while strengthening national technological sovereignty, industrial capacity, and employment in Germany.
